April Adventures in Mathematics

I found many interesting activities this month for my Grade 5 students to enjoy.  Check out Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Education Place if you haven’t already at:  http://www.eduplace.com/monthlytheme/april/math.html  for various mathematical activities at different elementary grade levels.

Particularly of interest to my class were:

Name That Term Grade 5:  Math Lingo

Computational Game Grade 5: Rock Hopper

Geometry Game Grade 5:  RoboPacker

Sequencing Challenge Grade 5:  Find A Friend

Test Taking Strategies Grade 5

Math:   Adding Fractions Song (sing to the tune of “Alouette”)

Adding Fractions,
Yes we’re adding fractions,
Here is the steps,
For what you have to do:
You need the same denominator,
Then you change the numerator,
Use the same number to multiply,
Next add the numerators,
Keep the same denominator,
And cancel common factors,
So you can simplify.

About musingsofamathteacher

I am presently employed at New Sarepta Elementary School as a grade five teacher. During my career I have taught Grades 12 - 2. The past three years I was fortunate to work part-time as Math Lead for my school district, Black Gold Regional Schools, and have just recently accepted a part-time secondment with Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium. I have always had a passion for mathematics and am excited about implementing Alberta's "new" mathematics curriculum.
